Mixed Rags

Mixed Rags is a category of bulk used clothing that is generated by thrift stores. Sometimes it is referred to as “institutional clothing” or “institutional mixed rags”. Mixed rags are compiled into large bales containing a mix of men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing items. These items were offered for resale in a thrift store but were not sold. Thrift store price tags will commonly be found still attached to the clothing.

The Demand for Mixed Rags

5.6 billion people–roughly 80% of the world’s population–wear second hand clothing. The availability of low-cost, high-quality clothing is important to children and adults around the world. In many developing markets, imported used clothing is less expensive and higher quality than new clothing.

We work closely with institutions across the U.S. to bring to market the very best bulk used clothing at affordable wholesale rates. We want to help bring affordable clothing options to those who need it the most.

MIXED RAGS HELP CREATE AND MAINTAIN SUSTAINABILITY IN THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY.

Mixed rags are an integral part of the wholesale used clothing industry. Each year thrift stores in the United States receive more than 2.5 million tons (or 5 billion pounds) of used clothing donations. Only about 10% of these donations are able to be resold in stores. If the mixed rags industry did not exist, 4.5 billion pounds of used clothing and other textiles would be sent to landfills across the country each year.
